BWP vs BWR vs MR plywood: which to use where

The plywood grade decides how long your kitchen and wardrobes last. Here's what each grade means and where it belongs.

Plywood is the hidden part of every cabinet, and the grade decides how well it survives water and humidity. Here is what BWP, BWR and MR mean, and where to use each in a Pune home.

The three common grades

GradeWhat it stands forWater resistanceUse it for
BWPBoiling Water Proof (often sold as marine grade)HighestKitchen sink base, bathroom vanities, anywhere water can collect
BWRBoiling Water ResistantGoodKitchen cabinets, utility areas, wardrobes on damp walls
MRMoisture ResistantBasicBedroom wardrobes, TV units and other dry areas

Where to use what

  • Kitchen sink base: BWP. This is where leaks happen, and replacing a swollen cabinet costs more than the upgrade.
  • Rest of the kitchen: BWR at least.
  • Bedrooms and living room: MR is usually enough, unless a wall is damp or shared with a bathroom.

How to check what you're getting

  1. Ask the firm to write the grade, brand and thickness for each unit in the quote.
  2. Check the marking stamped on the sheets when they arrive on site.
  3. Compare it with the quote before you approve the materials stage. BookInterio's Quality Auditor does this check for you.

Watch out: a quote that just says "commercial plywood" or "plywood" without a grade leaves room for a downgrade. Ask before you sign.
